Shoppers Outsmart Clerks, Abandon Carts in Offline Retail

A recent study by Motorola found that 55% of retail associates think their in-store customers are better connected to information about the products they sell than they are. Between online shopping tools, mobile phone apps, and other connectivity choices, consumers have more product info, coupons and discounts, and reviews at their fingertips than the people charged with selling them those products in stores. The consequences? 28% of real-world store visits ended with $132 worth of goods still sitting on store shelves instead of leaving the store with people who intended to purchase them, the victims of out-of-stock situations, lack of deals, uninformed store associates, and long check-out lines. This is not as high as the online rate of shopping cart abandonment (not surprising given the very different circumstances) but as Motorola concludes, retailers need to do a better job investing in technology to meet customer expectations for service in a world where consumers are very accustomed to the online retail experience with its instant access to information, promotions, and choices.
